Ennui (pronounced on-wee) is chronic boredom that involves weariness, apathy, dissatisfaction, and lack of fulfillment.

Some people experience a general sense of ennui in life, whereas others experience it in a specific domain, like their hobbies or work.

Signs of ennui include feeling that your routine is dull and monotonous, lacking enthusiasm and motivation excitement, feeling that what you do is meaningless, not caring about the future, and being exhausted.

To overcome ennui, start by asking yourself what’s bothering you about your current situation, and consider the kind of changes you should make in light of it.

Common changes include trying new things (ideally, a diverse range of relatively major experiences that you haven’t had before); varying your routine (ideally, while making various parts of it feel more exciting); eliminating unnecessary parts of your life that promote ennui; and making sure to get enough rest and support.

Ennui is a tough problem to tackle, especially if it coincides with depression, in which case you should prioritize getting necessary help. But, if you feel overwhelmed because you don’t know where to start or because the changes that you’re thinking of are too major, remember that it’s perfectly fine to start with even just a single small change. The important thing is to take that first step in the right direction, and then keep going, one step at a time.
