Fear, uncertainty, and doubt (FUD) are interconnected mental states that strongly influence people's behaviors, often as part of deliberate manipulation.
For example, a salesperson could use FUD to convince a customer to buy unnecessary software, by exaggerating potential online risks and making the customer underestimate their ability to handle those risks on their own.
Common FUD techniques include exaggerating the likelihood or impact of possible negative outcomes, attacking people's information sources, and overwhelming people with confusing information.
To deal with FUD, you should identify the relevant fears, uncertainties, and doubts, figure out their source, and then resolve them directly, using techniques like examining relevant information, creating distance from the source of the FUD, and addressing associated cognitive biases (like the bandwagon effect).
Just because something causes feelings of FUD, that doesn't mean it's necessarily false, and just because someone presents truthful information in a reasonable way, that doesn't mean that they're not engaging in a FUD campaign.
